Intangibles: Exploring the Full Depth of Issues
by C. W. Bowman

Sarnia, Ontario: Grafiks Marketing & Communications, 2005

The iceberg is a powerful metaphor for the Intellectual Capital of your organization, things that are "off the balance sheet." Think of your people, knowledge, skills, systems, processes, and relationships -- all intangible assets that will be the key determination for market success.

Do not let these assets dissipate over time! When the iceberg drifts into inhospitable waters, the foundations erode and the result is catastrophic tumbling. What seemed safe on the surface crashes into the water.
The big issues that your organization face involve intangibles -- they cannot be measured in the conventional sense but they can be recognized and evaluated. ProGrid offers an original and tested method for doing just this, modeling apparently opposing forces to define the "sweet spot" in two-dimensional space.

C.W. (Clem) Bowman, C.M., Ph.D., P.Eng., FCIC, FCAE, developed ProGrid methodology based on his experiences as Vice-President, Research Esso Petroleum Canada, Founding Chairman of the Alberta Oil Sands Technology and Research Authority and President of the Alberta Research Council. In these roles he was involved in major technology decisions and research impact assessments. He found that effective disciplined processes for such tasks were lacking. He was convinced that the inability to properly evaluate intangible factors was a major deficiency in traditional approaches. The methodology described in this book explains how to solve many types of decision or performance evaluation "headaches."

Clem Bowman has served in a variety of Executive positions with the Canadian Research Management Association and as President of the Chemical Institute of Canada and the Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering. His many awards include Member, Order of Canada.
