The Universe Next Door: A Complete
Guide to Exploring the Skies and
Understanding What You See

by Terry Holt

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1985

The Universe Next Door is the first introductory guide to combine the theory of astronomy with the techniques of observation and telescope use in one accessible volume. This book provides just the information that is useful to the beginning astronomer -- enough technique to help you find celestial objects, enough astronomy to make sense of what you see.

Beginning with instructions for viewing the sky without a telescope. Terry Holt explains the movement of the night sky and the basics of star finding and constellation gazing. He describes the different types of telescopes, eyepieces, mountings, and accessories, and helps you choose the right kind for your particular needs. He also takes you through common beginners' problems and frustrations so you'll get the most out of your viewing from your first night out.

After laying this practical, simple, groundwork, Holt takes you into observing the solar system, the Milky Way, and distant galaxies. Individual chapters will help you view and understand the sun, moon, planets, eclipses, asteroids, meteors, stars, nebulae, and comets, including Haley's Comet.

The appendices include four seasonal star charts for year-round viewing, instructions for building a general-purpose telescope and mount, data tables, a suppliers list, a guide to astrophotography, and the Messier and NGC catalogues of popular celestial objects. A bibliography and glossary are also included.

Profusely illustrated with over 150 photos, line drawings, and charts, The Universe Next Door is the best kind of instruction book, written by someone who has been an amateur astronomer for over 25 years and who really appreciates the difficulties of getting started in astronomy. It's a masterpiece of simplicity, clarity, and encouragement that will make the universe accessible to anyone who wants to learn about it.

Terry Holt, former associate editor of Engineering: Cornell Quarterly is currently on the faculty of a major east coast university. His fiction has appeared in The Kenyon Review and The 1982 O. Henry Collection.
