Oil and Islam: The Ticking Bomb
by Farid A. Khavari

Malibu, California: Roundtable, 1990

Behind the daily events in the Middle East which capture our attention, looms the real threat to world peace and prosperity. This threat cannot be conquered by military force; it is both intangible and extremely powerful: Fundamental Islam.

Oil & Islam: The Ticking Bomb explores the fascinating development of Islam, from the birth and life of Prophet Mohammed, through the rivalries and sectarianism of his descendants, to the world of today. Through the works of Islamic scholars, this book reveals the beliefs and underlying motivations of this misunderstood religion. The reasons for the radicalism of the Shi'ites become clear, as does the fact that the interests of the West and of Fundamentalist Islam are simply irreconcilable.

With this background, the significance of Saddam Hussein, the late Shah of Iran, Ayatollah Khomeini and his Islamic Revolution can be truly understood, and the disastrous folly of recent Western policy toward the Middle East can be appreciated. The oil crisis of the early 1970s, and the confrontation with Saddam Hussein in the early 1990s, pale in comparison to what the world will face in years to come if the Islamic Revolution succeeds in spreading throughout the vast Shi'ite majority in the Middle East.

The center of the Islamic Revolution, which continues in the Post-Khomeini era, is the Islamic Republic of Iran. This book shows why Iran will become the dominant power in the Middle East, regardless of the outcome of Saddam Hussein's adventure. The Western military presence in the region only encourages the Islamic Revolution.

This book presents the grim future which awaits us if the West does not act quickly, decisively and wisely. The author proposes comprehensive -- and essential -- policies which would bring sanity and peace to the Middle East, and secure the prosperity of the industrialized nations.

Farid A. Khavari received his doctorate in Economics from the University of Bremen, Germany. Since 1970, the analyses and predictions in his numerous books and articles on OPEC, oil and energy, have been proved accurate by subsequent world events.
