Designing Interactions
by Bill Moggridge

Cambridge, Massachusetts: MIT Press, 2007

Many significant innovations of recent years, such as Google, gaming, and mobile phone applications, are made possible by interaction design, yet relatively little is known about the discipline, the people, and the processes behind it. On the 25th anniversary of the first laptop computer, its designer, Bill Moggridge tells the stories of 43 of the world’s most influential thinkers and designers, tracing the evolution of their ideas from the first spark of inspiration to their eventual realization, with far-reaching consequences for our everyday lives.

Designing Interactions introduces readers to the people behind these innovations, their stories, insights and working methods: Larry Page and Sergey Brin, founders of Google; Tim Mott, inspiration behind the new ubiquitous desktop we see on our computers; Will Wright, creator of the real time computer game, The Sims; Doug Engelbart, inventor of the mouse; and the author himself, Bill Moggridge, designer of the world’s first laptop computer and co-founder of IDEO, one of the world’s most innovative companies.

Moggridge tells these stories from an industry insider’s viewpoint. He finds the key to success lies in observing the interactions people have with everyday things, designing in not only in the physical objects but also our interactions with them. He explains the human-centered approach that has been successful at IDEO and how people’s needs and desires can inspire innovation.

The book also discusses such questions as:

  • Why does a PC have a window in a desktop?
  • Why are Palm’s handheld organizers so successful?
  • Why is Google the search engine of choice?
  • What turns a game into a hobby?
  • Why have 30 million people in Japan choose the i-mode service for their mobile phones?
  • What is the future of our interactions with technology?

Designing Interactions combines insider anecdotes, practical insights, and thoughtful discussions in a compelling and accessible read. The accompanying DVD contains segments from the interview which can be viewed at www.designinginteractions.com.

Award-winning British designer Bill Moggridge is a co-founder of IDEO, independently ranked by Boston Consulting Group as one of the most innovative companies in the world. A Royal Designer for industry, he pioneered interaction design and is one of the first people to integrate human factors into the design of software and hardware. He has been a trustee of the Design Museum, Visiting Professor in Interaction Design at the Royal College of Art in London, Lecturer in Design at the London Business School and a member of the Steering Committee for the Interaction Design Institute in Ivrea, Italy. He is currently Consulting Associate Professor in the Joint Program in Design at Stanford University.
